Artist's Comments

So, very quick color concept for my next oil painting.

I need some input on what I should do.

This will most likely be 36x42" or 28x36" oil on canvas somewhere like that. And this is not cropped in yet. Not really sure on where I should crop, right at the shoulder and left at the elbow? I'm not sure.

Please help and tell me what you think.

The left is a cloud and the right is a mountain. If you didn't get it, and below them is the forest, probably will make that smaller in proportion.

This is could sooo great, I'm already excited :)
Love cloud's hair, their hands are so delicate, and facial expressions very real and engaging regardless of a non-purely realistic style.
There are some aspects of it that make me wonder though:
- mountain's right arm seems to be bent awkwardly; also, it's very central at the moment - do you actually want the placement to be so strong? Perhaps it would be better slightly shifted off, to lessen the attention at that spot.
- Top right mountain - are you planning to keep it this dark? Throws balance off in composition unless you'll balance it somehow on the left side of the piece;
- I wish you actually extended the forest - made it higher and allowed it to take up more space; I feel like the women are too dominant right now, which takes away from the fantasy feel of the piece. More distance would provide greater mystery.
- regarding cropping: I'd actually widen it... first of all, the hair is too much fun; second, I think the painting would be more interesting if instead of having the main subjects thrown into our light of sight we'd have to look for the main action in the piece. As if we just happen to come across it.

I, personally, would make this a portrait composition, and have the forest really gorgeously tall, with the clouds and mountains in the upper third. I think there is so much you could do with the colours, textures and vertical lines of the forest it would be a shame to compress it into a tiny segment.

I like the way the position of the arms frames the top of the forest - I would make this more obvious and either crop at the very edge of the arms or have the top of the canopy curl around them.

I also like how the clouds hands look like she#'s weaving something - it would be nice to maybe have leaves swirling around her hands (as if she's caused a breeze) and have birds or animals sitting on both of the Mountain's hands.

The colours are beautiful, stick with those lovely warm, slightly desaturated tones.

Can't wait to see how it comes out!

I love the colors and movement.
It reminds me of western Canada, the fluffy clouds, mountains, and forest.

Great concept! I would say don't crop it at all. IMO, you should continue the forest a little further and on both sides create some tree tops that continue the "fluffy" texture of their hair. Or maybe do that on the left and on the right have a waterfall that cascades from the mountain hair over the forest. That way you get the "big sky" "grand mountains" look that you might lose with cropping. Just a suggestion. What you've done already is such a cool idea though.

That sounds like a good idea with the tree and the waterfall!
